SHEBA

SHEBA Development of content and knowledge management tools for a greener healthcare system. www.sustainabilityforhealth.org

The Campaign for Greener Healthcare approached us with ambitious ideas for a system that would provide those working in healthcare to share knowledge acquired through experience about how they can make their workplaces and practices more sustainable. And so SHEBA was born.

Along with information architect Ben Weiner, we worked out a clean and simple structure for the site, assisted in the development of editorial policies to bring that structure to life, and implemented a Ruby on Rails application to manage the site. We set up hosting through bytemark, who took over management of the servers once we'd configured them so we can focus on ongoing improvements to the site itself.

As well as a suite of content management tools—and options for users to submit their own content and add comments to existing pieces—the the site provides a powerful search interface (based on apache solr) and aggregation tools so that data can be pulled directly from partner sites into SHEBA. For the latter we defined and documented appropriate vocabularies that can be used with the category support in the Atom syndication format to provide a deep-level of integration from the outset.
